Just about everyone will lock their keys in their car at one point or another. When this happens, it is important to stay calm so that you do not do anything that you will regret later on down the road. Do not smash a window, unless a child or pet is in danger, because you will cause more damage to your car than is needed. Use the guide below to learn what to do if you ever accidentally lock your keys in your car.

Call Your Insurance Company

The first thing you need to do is make a call to your car insurance company. Some people do not realize that many car insurance policies have an addendum in them that covers roadside assistance. The insurance agent that you speak to will be able to let you know if locksmith services are covered by your policy and he or she will be able to let you know if all of the costs will be covered by the company or if you will have to cover a portion of the costs on your own. The agent will be able to let you know what offices in the area are covered under your policy, if roadside assistance is included.

Contact the Locksmith

Next, you need to contact the locksmiths that the agent said were covered under your policy. You want to be sure that you let each company know where you are located and find out how long it will take for them to send a locksmith to your location before hiring a specific company to come to unlock your car. If you want to get on your way as quickly as possible, you need to hire the company that can arrive in the least amount of time. Once you find the right company, you need to let them know the make, model, and color of your car so that they can easily find it when they get to the lot. Ask how much the locksmith will charge to unlock your car so you can plan accordingly.

Wait Patiently for the Locksmith to Arrive

You will need to wait patiently for the locksmith to arrive. If it is overly hot or cold outside, go into a local business and wait for the locksmith to come to your vehicle. You will need to go out to the car when the locksmith arrives to verify that you did call him or her and to sign a release giving them permission to enter your vehicle.

Once the vehicle is unlocked, you will need to pay any portion of the cost that you are required to pay before leaving the scene. Some companies can take credit cards and some require you to pay cash so be sure that you get enough cash to cover the costs out of a nearby ATM while you are waiting for the locksmith to arrive, if you can.
